Harrier
Ken Beggs, and sons go east to do the Beijing Marathon
My
eldest son, David, has spent the past three years in China
teaching English to the locals.
As part of a reunion it was decided that our youngest son,
Neil,
would travel with me to China on the understanding that the
three of us would run the Beijing Marathon on 18th October
2009.
Ann did not fancy China so she thought that this would be
an ideal payback for the three of us on a jaunt around China.
Our first port of call was the walled city of Xi'an. We had
a great time in the week we spent there and as well as running
along and around the walls we managed to visit the Terracotta
Army, the Hua Shan Mountains and other sites in and around
the city.
The three of us then left for Beijing on a 13 hour overnight
train journey arriving Friday morning at about 8am. Saturday
we spent getting ourselves familiar with the route from our
hostel to the start
of the marathon and also the layout of the finish at the Olympic
Village. Not the best preparation for a marathon as we did
a lot of sightseeing.
Sunday I was up at 0540am and the three of us made our way
to the Marathon Start at Tiananmen Square. This was very congested
especially as our baggage bus (allocated to foreign runners)
was situated about 20 metres from the start line of the marathon.
Unfortunately I got separated from my sons and missed them
throughout the marathon as I assumed they were in front of
me.
The race it self was excellent. The weather was cool and overcast,
no smog, nice straight and well maintained roads with plenty
of water and isotonic feeding stations. The route was marshaled
by the Chinese military and young soldiers in dress uniform
were standing to attention and facing away from the runners
at an interval of about 15 metres. No shortage of manpower
in China.
Anyway father won the Beggs race in 3hrs 55mins 53secs, Neil
was second in 4hrs 00mins 33secs and David finished in 4hrs
47mins 09secs. Not surprising when Neil did a little bit of
training and David did nothing except a bit of Tai Chi.
China and the Chinese were brilliant and a great time was
had by all, though I'm not too sure that the lads will run
another marathon. - Ken Beggs

Barcelona
Marathon 1st March 2009.

From Ken Beggs:
Hi Folks -
Just a short word about a great time my family
and I had over this weekend.
It was our first family reunion in about 30 months
after our eldest boy went off to work in China and we all
enjoyed ourselves immensely.
On the Saturday morning we all ran the Breakfast
run from the Marathon start to the Olympic stadium (high up
on a hill).
Ann and Victoria were not over the moon about
the climb.
That evening we settled into an irish Pub and
watched Ireland beat England at the 6 Nations Rugby game.
Not the best preparation for the Marathon the next morning.
Nonetheless I lined up and completed the Marathon in 3hrs
47mins and 11secs. A bad stitch at the 23 miles did not help
but I was happy with the result in my first marathon of 2009.Better
still in another Irish Bar afterwards I watched Man Utd win
the Carling Cup Final, a fitting end to a great w/end. Ken

'Running For Carol'
On
Sunday morning 8th March, 30 East Antrim Harriers and 6 friends
from Lagan Valley Athletic Club and Valley Leisure Centre
competed in the 'Between the Bridges' 10K Race. The event
which attracted 4000 plus competitors took place on The West
Link which was closed to traffic and was held to mark the
official opening of the new West Link upgrade. The 36 runners
were raising funds for Action Cancer and also to demonstrate
their support for East Antrim Harriers secretary Carol Annesley.
Carol was diagnosed with a cancer related illness prior to
Christmas and is currently undergoing lengthy post operative
treatment. The Club decided not to run in their traditional
Black and White hooped vests for the event and instead wore
stunning pink Tee-shirts supplied by Action Cancer. As well
as the Action Cancer Logo each Tee-Shirt displayed the message
'Running for Carol'. The Action Cancer Charity will benefit
by several thousand pounds raised by all 36 runners.
The 10k race, run in blustery conditions also proved to be
a success for East Antrim Harriers athletes with Ian Bailey
gaining a podium position with an excellent 3rd place in a
time of 34mins and 20secs. Sam Crawford finished in 12th place
with Colin James coming home in 14th. 3 athletes in the first
14 places ensured that East Antrim Harriers were the most
successful club competing in the event.
The award for courage must go to Carol Annesley who despite
her illness completed the 5k walk accompanied by her Physiotherapist
Dawn Aiken and fellow club member Gemma Beggs.
Congratulations to all the East Antrim Harriers and friends
who braved the elements and helped to make it such a memorable
day both in terms of the race success but also in their fund
raising for Action Cancer.
